About Tesco

Tesco is one of the world's largest retailers providing grocery home shopping, financial services, mobile and more across the UK. Over the years, Tesco has evolved from a modest market stall in London's East End to become a global retail powerhouse with a presence in numerous countries. The company's commitment to providing quality products at affordable prices has earned it a place at the forefront of the British retail industry.

Tesco operates a diverse range of stores, including hypermarkets, supermarkets, and convenience stores, catering to the diverse needs of its customers. In addition to groceries, Tesco offers clothing, electronics, household goods, and a variety of other products, making it a one-stop destination for shoppers.

Beyond its retail operations, Tesco has demonstrated a strong dedication to corporate responsibility and community engagement. It was the first retailer to sign the Armed Forces Covenant in 2014, exemplifying its commitment to supporting veterans and military personnel. Tesco actively participates in various social and environmental initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a sustainable future.

As a major private sector employer in the UK, Tesco plays a pivotal role in the country's economy, providing job opportunities and career growth for a vast number of individuals. With its extensive reach and continued commitment to excellence, Tesco remains a cornerstone of British retail, serving as a trusted and reliable brand for generations of shoppers.

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Community

Tesco was the first retailer to sign the Armed Forces Covenant in 2014. As Gold award winners of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, Tesco serves as a fantastic example of how to translate pledges into action. They acknowledge the transferable skills and qualifications acquired during military service and collaborate with the Careers Transition Partnership to assist Armed Forces personnel in securing their subsequent civilian employment. Through participation in careers events hosted by the CTP, Tesco has played a pivotal role in helping Service leavers secure employment across various sectors and positions.

Notably, Tesco actively recruits from the Armed Forces Community and ensures comprehensive support for ex-military individuals transitioning from military life, as well as providing the necessary advice and assistance to their families. To further bolster their commitment, they have established the Volunteer Reserve Forces and Veterans’ Policy, which offers additional support to reservist staff. Tesco also extends its unwavering support to military spouses.

As a business, Tesco has maintained a steadfast connection with the Armed Forces since its inception in 1919 when founder Jack Cohen, himself a veteran who served in the Royal Flying Corps at the conclusion of the First World War, established Tesco. This enduring relationship underscores their commitment to the military community.

Remarkably, nearly one percent of all veterans leaving the Army choose to join the Tesco team. As the United Kingdom's largest private sector employer, Tesco is unwavering in its determination to provide comprehensive support to its Armed Forces colleagues. Their objective is to ensure that Tesco remains a workplace where everyone is welcomed and empowered to thrive, underscoring their dedication to the welfare of those who have served in the Armed Forces.
