Mears Group is committed to honouring the Armed Forces Covenant and to support the Armed Forces community. Holder of the MoD’s Gold Employer Recognition Scheme award, Mears regularly attends Career Transition Partnership events to network with skilled service leavers and partners, promoting its many opportunities. Around 35 veterans currently work for Mears. An Armed Forces Working Group drives military activities, chaired by Mears' Armed Forces Champion.
Mears recognises the many skills that are gained during Military service and which are transferable to the workplace, including adaptability, organisation, communication, team work and leadership. In addition to the many skills that spouses / partners of serving personnel also have, including the resilience they have gained, through being part of the Armed Forces community.
Vacancies are shared on military job boards. Guaranteed interviews are offered to suitable veteran applicants, plus short work placements for experience. Diverse roles across Mears emphasise transferable skills from the Armed Forces. Any role-specific development is incorporated into personal plans. Where service qualifications lack onsite experience, placements are provided. With no experience, apprenticeships across trades and support services are offered. Personal development plans are regularly reviewed at one-to-ones and appraisals, identifying progression opportunities. An Armed Forces policy defines obligations to reservists, veterans, partners etc. Manager guidance assists in supporting those groups. Flexible working is considered for all. Mears seeks to support reservists with leave or work pattern changes. Employees are released for reservist duties with continuous service. In recognition, reservists get 10 extra days paid leave annually.
Mears recruitment team ensures that all current vacancies are posted on the various Job Boards utilised by the Armed Forces Community. We also provide a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for those who apply for jobs with Mears, provided they meet the key criteria for the role. We also provide (where possible), short duration work placements to help gain experience and complete elements of practical assessments for qualifications being undertaken during resettlement.
Mears are also Registered Corporate Partners of the Royal British Legion. We support Remembrance commemorations, in addition to taking part in various sporting events to help raise valuable funds for this very important charity.
