About Lloyd's of London

Lloyd’s – the world’s insurance marketplace. Bringing together experts who share intelligence, judgement, capital and risk to create a braver world.

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Community

Lloyd's of London is the world's leading insurance and reinsurance marketplace where brokers and underwriters come together to buy and sell insurance across over 200 territories and industries. Lloyd's has an excellent reputation for recruiting military veterans into long-term roles. The talent acquisition team understands the challenges veterans face transitioning to civilian life and facilitates recruiting them across the Corporation of Lloyd's and the wider Lloyd's Market.

The Lloyd's Military Network (LMN) supports veterans transitioning into the insurance industry. It is a cross-industry network with hundreds of members, supported by firms in the London market. The LMN hosts regular events where veterans can network and share experiences in a relaxed environment. While these events aid development, the social aspect allows veterans to link with peers who can offer career advice by sharing their own experiences. Informal networking tends to happen organically, but there are also specific networking events. The retention of veterans suggests they feel engaged and empowered by the LMN.

The LMN runs an 8-week placement scheme twice a year, featured on the Career Transition Partnership, offering insight into potential roles and nurturing veterans so they can secure suitable jobs. Roles vary but fundamentally require skills like stakeholder management, communication, meeting coordination and workload management. Veterans receive technical insurance training and are assigned a mentor during the placement to support networking and securing employment. Over 1,000 veterans are employed across Lloyd's Corporation and the Lloyd's Market, typically working 9-5 Monday-Friday with flexible working opportunities. Salaries vary by role and experience. Lloyd's provides funded training to support veterans' career development and placement hosts have supported service leavers in gaining CII qualifications.

The LMN also hosts biannual Insight Days ahead of the placement schemes to share information on available roles. Veterans present their experiences, including those who secured employment through the placement scheme, to provide an authentic, relatable insight into opportunities and roles. The day concludes with a Q&A session, application guidance and networking. The Insight Days are well-received and generate many applications. Roles include broking, underwriting, project management, IT, cyber, risk management, operations and bid management. The Insight Day helps veterans understand where their skills align and roles of interest. A LinkedIn page with c.850 members raises awareness of veteran opportunities.

The LMN closely aligns with two military charities - the Lloyd's Patriotic Fund and the Royal British Legion. Founded in 1803, the Lloyd's Patriotic Fund unites market support to aid veterans' transition to civilian life. On the Friday before Remembrance Sunday, the Underwriting Room hosts thousands of veterans, brokers, underwriters and employees in a poignant service honouring the fallen, marked by a two-minute silence and the ringing of the Lutine Bell. A guard of honour including naval reserves, army and cadets is hosted for lunch by Lloyd's, and the LMN socialises afterwards.
