Description
Community Engagement Workers: The Fund employs nine Community Engagement Workers who cover the East and South East of England. They also offer remote support to RAF Family members residing outside these areas. Their primary goal is to address loneliness, a condition that can lead to serious health issues like heart disease, strokes, and Alzheimer's disease. Loneliness can strike at various life stages, including during bereavement, living alone, relocating to a new area, facing poor health or reduced mobility, dealing with a disability, or having caring responsibilities. Research from 2015 indicated that around 170,000 RAF Family members may experience isolation.
These Community Engagement Workers work in tandem with telephone friendship groups and group wellbeing breaks to combat loneliness. They assist individuals in reconnecting with their local communities through practical support, such as helping with transportation solutions or covering respite care costs. They even accompany individuals to social groups to boost their confidence.
The program operates in nine counties: Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent, West Sussex, and Hampshire. Remote support is also available for RAF Family members living outside these areas.
Additionally, the Community Engagement team organizes various social activities, including breakfast clubs, coffee mornings, and specialised groups for those living with dementia and their caregivers. For those unable to leave their homes or with caregiving responsibilities, the team connects them to Telephone Friendship Groups or local befriending services.
