Housing Support Schemes Every Veteran Should Know

A Straightforward Guide to Housing Help by Troopr

Leaving the Armed Forces is a big transition and finding a stable, affordable home can be one of the biggest challenges you face. Whether you're just preparing to leave, recently discharged, or have been out for a while, knowing your housing options is key.

The good news? You’re not alone. Here’s a breakdown of the most trusted housing support schemes available to you right now.

What the Armed Forces Covenant means for housing

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the UK government and local councils that veterans should not face disadvantage when it comes to housing. Here's what that means in practice:

  • Local councils must consider your service when assessing housing applications.
  • You may get priority access to social housing, especially within five years of leaving.
  • If you're homeless or at risk, councils and charities should act quickly and supportively.
  • Your military service must not count against you, for example, not having a recent rental history shouldn't be a barrier.

HAIG Housing

HAIG Housing is the largest housing charity in the UK specifically for veterans. They own and manage over 1,500 properties across the country — and their mission is to help veterans in housing need.

What You Need to Know:

  • They offer affordable rented homes — no profit-making, just fair rent.
  • Applications are open to all veterans, but priority goes to those with disabilities, injuries, or urgent housing needs.
  • They can help with long-term housing, not just short-term fixes.

Stoll Housing

If you’re facing additional challenges like poor health, mental health issues, or homelessness, Stoll could be the right fit.

They provide supported housing, mostly in London, alongside access to welfare services, counselling, and community support.

Key Features:

  • Secure housing with on-site support staff.
  • Help with moving on to independent living when you're ready.
  • Services for those recovering from PTSD, addiction, or trauma.

SSAFA’s Housing Advice Service helps veterans and their families understand their housing rights and options. Whether you're trying to apply for social housing, facing eviction, or don’t know where to turn, SSAFA can help.

What They Can Do:

  • Talk to you about how to apply for council housing.
  • Support with temporary accommodation if you’re at risk of homelessness.
  • Help deal with landlords, benefits, arrears, or legal letters.
  • Provide Stepping Stone Homes for women and families in crisis.

What to do if you’re struggling with housing

  1. Contact your local council and tell them you are a veteran. Ask how they apply the Armed Forces Covenant.
  2. Get in touch with SSAFA
  3. Apply to charities like HAIG or Stoll if you’re in need of long-term or supported housing.
  4. Use Troopr to search for housing support.
  5. Don’t wait until you’re in crisis — the earlier you ask for help, the more options you’ll have.
