With longer days and Armed Forces Week just behind us, summer is peak season for veteran-focused sport and outdoor activity across the UK. Whether it is small boat sailing off the Cornish coast, a charity cycle ride through the countryside, or a kick-around with some other mates, there is a growing network of organisations making it easier for veterans to get outside, get active, and reconnect.

You do not need to be fit, competitive, or fully recovered from anything to take part. You just need to show up.

Why Outdoor Activity Works So Well for Veterans

Getting outside does more than fill an afternoon. For many veterans, it recreates things civilian life does not naturally offer:

  • Purpose: a challenge to train for or work towards, rather than drifting through the week
  • Achievement: completing something physically demanding, on your own terms
  • Connection: being around others who understand service life without having to explain it
  • Calm: time away from noise, screens and routine, with space to think or not think at all

That is why outdoor and adventure-based activity is increasingly used alongside more traditional wellbeing support across the Armed Forces community, and why summer, with its longer daylight hours and calmer weather, is the best time of year to start.

Sailing and Watersports

Turn to Starboard — Falmouth, Cornwall

RYA-accredited sailing courses and adventure challenges for veterans and Armed Forces families, run by a mix of Yachtmasters and volunteers, many of them ex-service themselves. Some veterans go on to gain formal yachting qualifications after starting here. Sessions are pitched as low-pressure and supportive rather than sink-or-swim.

Veterans Outdoors

Runs small boat sailing combined with beach yoga as part of a structured six-week course, alongside ARTEMIS events reserved for female veterans and Armed Forces family members. No sailing experience needed for either.

Cycling Challenges

Royal British Legion Cycling Events

Charity bike rides of varying distance and difficulty, raising money for RBL's financial, social and emotional support work with veterans and serving personnel.

Cycling UK — The Veterans Charity: Ride To Horsa

A three-day ride honouring the D-Day operations of Coup de Main and Elmira, finishing with the unveiling of a new memorial. Places are limited, so early registration matters if this one appeals. Find out more about The Veterans Charity.

Multi-Activity and Adventure Programmes

Veterans Outdoors

Beyond sailing, Veterans Outdoors builds personalised outdoor programmes around the NHS's 5 Steps to Wellbeing, including a weekly walled garden horticulture project, described by the charity itself as somewhere "a lot of tea gets drunk." Programmes are open to veterans, spouses and partners, with referral routes through GPs and NHS mental health services as well as self-referral.

The Outward Bound Trust

Rock climbing in the Lake District, sailing along the Welsh coast, camping expeditions in the Scottish Highlands. Not veteran-exclusive, but well suited to Armed Forces families looking for adventure activities over summer, with an Adventure Fund available for those who need financial support to take part.

What to Expect if You Have Never Done This Before

Turning up to something new is usually the hardest part, not the activity itself.

  • No experience required for sailing, cycling or horticulture sessions listed here
  • Instructors and volunteers are used to working with veterans specifically, including those managing injury, PTSD or a long break from structured activity
  • Group sizes are often small, and most events are either free or ask for a modest donation
  • You can usually register interest first and get full joining instructions before committing to anything

FAQs: Veterans' Sports and Outdoor Activities

Do I need previous experience to join a veterans' sailing or cycling event?

No. Organisations like Turn to Starboard and Veterans Outdoors run sessions specifically for beginners, and RBL cycling events cater to a range of abilities and distances.

Are these activities free?

Many are free or low-cost, particularly those run by charities such as Veterans Outdoors and Turn to Starboard, which typically ask only for a modest donation. Charity cycling challenges may involve a fundraising commitment instead of an entry fee.

Can spouses and family members take part?

Yes, in most cases. Veterans Outdoors and Turn to Starboard both welcome spouses, partners and wider Armed Forces family members alongside veterans.

Are there activities specifically for female veterans?

Yes. Veterans Outdoors runs ARTEMIS events exclusively for female participants, covering activities including sailing and beach yoga.

How do I get referred to an outdoor wellbeing programme?

Some veterans self-refer directly. Others are referred by a GP, NHS mental health services, or a military welfare organisation. Contact the charity directly to check the best route in.

Make the Most of the Season

Whether it is a single afternoon in a walled garden or a three-day cycling challenge finishing at a memorial unveiling, summer is the easiest time of year to try something new outdoors. The hardest part is usually just registering interest — after that, most of these organisations do the rest.
