My two-week placement with Galliford Try began through a simple conversation with friends, which led to an introduction to recruiter Jenny Reid. From our initial texts and a follow-up call, where I outlined my military background and experience, Jenny quickly recognised a potential fit and introduced me to Lorraine Beadell.

Following a series of engaging and informal discussions with Lorraine, she identified the South East Aylesbury Link Road (SEALR) project as an ideal opportunity for me—offering exposure to a broad range of disciplines within a live and complex infrastructure project.

From day one, the experience exceeded expectations. I was warmly welcomed on site by Aleks, the Senior Site Agent, who provided a comprehensive induction, PPE, and a well-structured plan outlining my placement journey. This thoughtful approach immediately set the tone for a highly organised and supportive environment.

This experience has not only broadened my understanding of the industry but has also led to an exciting opportunity as a Section Foreman — something I am incredibly proud to have achieved.

My first week began with Tom, the HS&E Advisor, whose commitment and willingness to share his expertise were exceptional. He dedicated significant time to helping me understand both his role and the wider project. Being taken out on site from the very first day provided invaluable context—bringing the project to life and highlighting not only its scale but also the importance of safety, planning, and delivery in its final stages.

Throughout the remainder of the week, I gained hands-on insight by spending time with engineers, planners, and site teams. I observed how engineers capture precise measurements, how planners coordinate between multiple stakeholders to ensure effective programme delivery, and how experienced foremen and works teams oversee operations with a deep, practical understanding of the entire site.

Week two built on this foundation, offering further exposure to key functions across the project. The quantity surveying team provided valuable insight into the commercial management of work packages, while the Project Manager shared clear guidance on career pathways and development opportunities within Galliford Try. In addition, learning about the organisation’s social value initiatives through Sara highlighted the company’s wider impact beyond construction.

As the placement progressed, I developed a clear appreciation of how each specialist role contributes to the success of the project and how critical collaboration and communication are across all functions. What stood out most to me, however, was the dynamic nature of site-based work. Watching the foreman and works manager translate plans into reality—coordinating teams and subcontractors—was particularly engaging. This ultimately inspired me to focus my final days on site operations, learning directly from Gary and Graham.

Reflecting on the experience, these two weeks were incredibly rewarding. The entire team created an inclusive and encouraging environment where I felt valued from the outset. Everyone was generous with their time, open to questions, and genuinely invested in my development—something that made a lasting impression.

I would strongly recommend this placement to any service leaver considering a transition into construction. Engaging early with Lorraine Beadell is key, as the programme provides a unique opportunity to demonstrate your skills and potential in a practical setting—far beyond what can be conveyed on paper.

This experience has not only broadened my understanding of the industry but has also led to an exciting opportunity as a Section Foreman on the project—something I am incredibly proud to have achieved.

My sincere thanks to everyone at Galliford Try who supported me along the way.
