How one veteran found his civilian career with Galliford Try — and now helps others do the same.
Pete Fish spent 23 years serving with the Royal Air Force Military Police before leaving in 2009. After working for a health and safety company in Grantham, he was ready for a new challenge — and found it at Galliford Try.
Pete's route in was straightforward: he sent his CV, it reached Lorraine who passed it to line manager Graham Beacons, and after a successful interview Pete joined the team in July 2023 as a Health & Safety Advisor. No placement required. His background and experience got him through the door.
I joined the buddy system as soon as I was employed at Galliford Try. It's a great system — and I've mentored two people so far. I hope they get the benefit of that mentorship, and that the transition to civilian employment has hopefully been a lot smoother.

Pete now pays it forward. As part of Galliford Try's military buddy programme, he mentors other veterans making the same transition — helping them settle into a new industry and a new way of working.
Pete came in through a direct application. But if you want to get a feel for the work and the culture before committing to a permanent role, Galliford Try's two-week placement is built exactly for that.
