Internal Redeployment Only - Research Associate, CARE

Cardiff University School of Social Sciences is seeking to recruit a Research Associate to work within the Centre for Adult Social Care Research (CARE) Research Centre that is located within the School.

In this role you will conduct research within adult social care and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.

This is an exciting opportunity to be a full-time researcher on a new study into older men's experiences of hoarding and self-neglect and their engagement with social care services in Wales. This is a new project funded by the NIHR Research for Social Care programme to 31st January 2028. The post holder will be primarily supporting this project and leading on fieldwork activity (interviews with older men, social care professionals and other agency leads, analysis of case notes), qualitative data analysis and public involvement, and contributing to project outputs, resources and reporting.

The study's overarching aim is to identify ways of enhancing support and service engagement for older men experiencing hoarding and self-neglect concurrently (including where hoarding leads to self-neglect concerns) in Wales.
Research questions:

  • How do older men (60 + years) experiencing hoarding and self-neglect concurrently engage with social care services?
  • How do gender and masculinities shape social care responses to older men in this group?
Our collaborators are four Welsh local authorities, Holistic Hoarding (South Wales charity) and Social Care Wales (national social care regulator).

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is fixed term until 31st January 2028 and is immediately available.

Salary: £41,064 - £46,049 per annum (Grade 6), with annual increments up to final salary at top of grade). New appointments are usually made at the starting point of the salary scale.

Responsible to Professor Paul Willis, Principal Investigator

It is an exciting and vibrant place to work, with many different challenges and is a proud Living Wage supporter.

CARE aims to build on an existing track record of research on adult social care and the health-social care interface, from across Cardiff University. To ensure its work is relevant to the social care sector, CARE has a strategic advisory group of senior leaders and policy makers, and also has set up advisory panels of practitioners and people with lived experience of receiving social care services. The development of CARE is supported by the Children's Social Care Research and Development Centre (CASCADE), Exchange, and the Cardiff University schools of Social Sciences, Business, Healthcare Sciences, Law, Medicine, and Psychology.
