Become a volunteer mentor
Description
Every young person has a spark of ambition. But with an unfair start in life — and the weight of feeling alone — it’s easy to lose your way. With a mentor, everything changes. Awaken their ambition. Volunteering one hour a week has the power to change a life. Become a mentor with MCR Pathways. Ignite that spark.
No prior experience of mentoring is required - simply bring a listening ear, empathy and understanding, as well as a passion for building confidence, instilling self belief, awakening ambition, and much more.
Dedicate an hour a week in a school near you to meet with your young person during the school day - typically between 9am-3pm. Meetings will run during the school term, and we hope you can commit to mentoring for a minimum period of a year.
Our mentoring recrutiment process:
- Step 1 - Register your interest in becoming a mentor: Simply register online to get started. As part of that process we have a very short video for you to watch and quick and easy form to fill in. Then you’re done.
- Step 2 - Meet with us to tell us more about yourself: Meet with one of our team so we can find out more about yourself, your interests and experiences. This will help us in matching you to a young person.
- Step 3 - Attend a mentor training session: Attend a session held near you which is designed to provide all the information, guidance and confidence needed to build strong and meaningful relationships with young people.
- Step 4 - The matching phase begins: Using all the information gathered, we will begin the process of finding a suitable match. Our Mentor Services team will be on hand at every stage to guide you through this process.
- Step 5 - Meeting your young person: Begin meeting with your young person, where you will establish rapport and trust by learning more about the lives they lead, their aspirations, the things that matter and much more.

We are committed to helping every young person from the armed forces community unlock their potential through the power of mentoring.
Life in an armed forces family brings unique challenges—frequent moves, new schools, changing curricula, long periods of parental separation, and the transition to civilian life. These disruptions can make it hard to stay on track. A mentor can offer stability, guidance, and encouragement to help young people thrive.
No prior experience of mentoring is required - simply bring a listening ear, empathy and understanding, as well as a passion for building confidence, instilling self belief, awakening ambition, and much more.
